Hi Friends, I’m Em Cruickshank.
I’m Em Cruickshank, founder of The Yin Crowd. For more than a decade I’ve taught Yin Yoga, meditation and contemplative practice — not simply as things we do, but as ways of understanding ourselves and how we meet our lives.
More than a thousand students and four hundred private clients later, one thing has become increasingly clear to me: most of us don’t need more information. We need to understand what we are already doing with the information we have.
Before all of this, I spent years in the corporate world ; fast-paced, high-performing and, for a long time, largely disconnected from my own body. That experience taught me a great deal about stress, burnout, boundaries and what happens when we spend our lives operating from the neck up. It also means I understand that world. I know how to take teachings that can sometimes feel philosophical or abstract and translate them into something practical enough to use in the middle of an ordinary Tuesday.
My work today sits where ancient wisdom and modern life meet. It is informed by Buddhism, Taoism, Traditional Chinese Medicine and more than a decade of teaching and practice, alongside a contemporary understanding of the body, nervous system, behaviour and habitual response.
I teach the energetics of the body through Yin Yoga, Qi Gong, fascia, meridians and the Five Elements, alongside meditation, breath, somatic awareness, contemplation and inquiry. But underneath all of those practices sits the same question: can we understand ourselves well enough to recognise what is shaping our experience, and learn to meet it differently?
That question runs through everything I do.
In my private one-to-one work, I teach a practical framework for recognising the perceptions, patterns and habitual responses shaping our experience, and learning how to navigate life with greater awareness, clarity and inner authority.
On retreat, we have the luxury of time. Through silence, meditation, Qi Gong, Yin Yoga, breathwork, Dharma, contemplation and deep rest, we create the conditions to step away from the usual noise and actually practise.
And in my Yin Yoga teacher trainings, I teach teachers how to teach. Not simply how to sequence postures, but how to understand the body, energetics and philosophy behind the practice and translate what they know into something they can genuinely teach. For me, good teaching has never been about performance. It is about presence, curiosity, humility and understanding what you are asking another person to explore.
I don’t do bypass or platitudes, and I’m not particularly interested in telling you how your life should look.
I am interested in helping you understand how you meet it.
Whether we are working together privately, sitting in silence on retreat or studying in a teacher training, the intention is ultimately the same: to develop the awareness and understanding that allow you to recognise what is happening, take responsibility for what is yours and choose how you want to respond.
Because the point of this work isn’t to become dependent on a teacher, a practice or a particular set of conditions.
It is to know how to meet your own life.

I have been working with Em for years now, first as my Yin yoga instructor, then on Yoga Retreats and also with private sessions. Em has helped me learn about myself in ways I have been unable to achieve with other practitioners. I can see the progress I’m making, and frankly, am astonished at how clearly the progress shows. Her sessions help me tap into my truth and my purpose and have helped me live my life in a more emotionally stable and inspirational way. If you are looking for someone to work with you, really see you and offer both coaching and guidance, I can’t recommend her highly enough. In person or online, both work exceptionally well.

Words will never be enough for me to explain what Em has been- and is- for me, or my level of gratitude for her. In October 2024 I attended a 3 day silent retreat run by Em. I had prescribed myself antidepressants (I am a doctor) to start on the Monday as I was depressed and at the end of my tether after years of pretty shitty life events and nothing working. I never had to fill the script. To this day I still cannot explain it. The closest I can get to, is Em helped me to find myself again and showed me that was was going on around me didn’t have to define me. I continued to work with her in one on ones after and it has been nothing short of transformational (hate that word, sorry, but it’s true). If I could sum up what I have gained in one word it would be resilience- and I never thought I’d describe myself that way. In the face of another challenging year externally, I am my happiest, calmest and most resilient self. I have Em to thank for that. Em continues to mentor me and guide me to ways of thinking and being that only continue to enrich my existence. Thank you doesn’t cut it.

“Working with Em has been one of the most grounding and honest experiences of my life. She has a rare ability to blend deep wisdom with real-world practicality, creating spaces where you feel both deeply supported and gently challenged. Nothing about her work feels surface-level — it’s real, intelligent, compassionate, and transformational. I walked away feeling calmer in my nervous system, clearer in my mind, and more connected to myself than I have in years.”
